Review: This park was not easy to get to, but we thought it was worth the drive. We came from northern Kentucky through Huntington, WV, then down WV-10, where they were doing roadwork, but it was very rough! Hughes Branch Road was a in a little better shape, but quite windy and narrow, and even under water in a couple of places (they don’t call it flooding here, it’s “high water” over a portion of the road).

Helpful state park staff let us choose our site at Old Orchard, which is the area with full hookups (no reservations until Memorial Day weekend), and we chose Site #34, right next to the lake. If it’s been raining, you should probably choose a site further from the lake because we were a little waterlogged in our site.

The campground has a little store and a nice walking path adjacent, which gave us a chance to see birds and trees that we don’t see in California. This park is definitely not on the main road, but it’s a pretty place to camp if you prefer a natural setting to a parking lot-type of campsite.
