Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site Campground

15588 History Lane
Petersburg, IL 62675

Date Visited: July 2019

Site: #47, BACK-IN, ELECTRIC ONLY, 50 AMP

We paid: $20 per night (cash or check only)

Review: This campground does not take reservations, but it almost never fills up, so you’re pretty likely to get a site unless you show up on one of their two festival weekends.

They only take cash or checks, and then you pick your own site. We went to one of the back loops. Some sites are 30-amp and some are 50-amp, so you have to check carefully. We picked a site that had 50-amp and was in close proximity to the main water spigot, which we didn’t end up using, but would have been handy if we had stayed another couple of days.

Apparently there is a dump station on site, but we didn’t see it or use it.

This is a very pretty campground with lots of grass and shady trees. Sites are quite level, asphalt pads, and quite long. There are lots of birds in the trees and a nice cool breeze much of the time.

The campground is walking/biking distance to the New Salem historic village, and a 20-minute drive to Springfield and the Lincoln sights there. You’re very close to the town of Petersburg, including a Dairy Queen and Ann Rutledge’s grave. We would definitely stay here again if we were in the area.
